This chapter explores the use of public key infrastructure (PKI) in the automotive sector and the challenges faced in securing VANET messaging using PKI. It examines some of the fails that have been discovered in how public key encryption was implemented by OEMs as findings in previous penetration tests. The chapter provides information on ciphertext, PKI, and public key encryption. VANETs enable vehicles to set up and maintain communication between one another and to roadside units without using a central base station or controllers, such as what is found in wireless local area networks. Dedicated short‐range communication is based on IEEE 802.11p and is highly beneficial to vehicle‐to‐everything communication. Cryptography ensures the confidentiality of data at rest and in transit to ensure confidentiality of data for entities authorized to view it. Encryption is employed to render data unreadable by unintended third parties through the use of advanced mathematical formulas.
