A fitting is a part used to connect at least two other parts and transfer load effectively at the junction. Its main characteristic is that it, usually, transmits loads in multiple directions. Fittings are typically small compared to the parts they connect. The goal of any good design of a composite fitting is to minimize the out‐of‐plane loading situation that relies on the matrix to transfer the load. This, in the simplest solution, requires a combination of increased thickness and flange area and in the most complex the use of an out‐of‐plane reinforcement at the critical areas. Most fittings are special‐purpose parts that are specific to the geometry and loading situation of the parts they connect. Therefore, a description of all fittings and a creation of appropriate generic analysis methods is, if not impossible, definitely inefficient.
