This chapter provides an introduction to eXtensible Markup Language (XML) technology as applicable to color management applications. It describes the basic building blocks and components of the XML language, including the declaration, elements, attributes, schema and namespaces. The iccMAX architecture supports various "profile connections" where data can be added to the color processing pipeline via XML. One of the most prominent uses of XML in color management is the Microsoft® Windows Color System (WCS). Color Exchange Format (CxF) is described in ISO 17972 which creates openness and standardization, and the technology is even more useful as it is enjoys the strengths and universal acceptance of XML. All of the asset files within X‐Rite i1Profiler are XML files, each file type is merely given a different extension in order to assist the user in identifying the asset type. Color control on an offset press can be done via an XML vocabulary called Job Definition Format (JDF).
