The Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) stabilizes, controls, and positions a satellite in a desired orientation despite any external or internal disturbances acting on it. The need for active attitude control is determined by the nanosatellite's mission and its attitude requirements. This chapter elaborates the methods for attitude stabilization and control. To enable the attitude and angular rate controllers to calculate the control torques, measurements or estimates of the orbit referenced angular rate vector and attitude quaternion must be known at sampling instances. Most types of ADCS sensors and actuators flying on larger satellites can be found in miniaturized form for use in nanosatellites. The chapter presents some examples of the nanosatellite ADCS components that are available commercially and have been successfully commissioned in various nanosatellite missions.
