As part of its strategic plan, each airline selects a flight network structure, which represents how it serves the different city‐pairs and also how the scheduled flights are configured in the form of attractive itineraries. Three major network types are commonly used: Hub‐and‐spoke network; point‐to‐point network; and hybrid network structure. This chapter focuses on the hub‐and‐spoke network and provides an example of a hub‐and‐spoke airline with a single hub at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL). The main logic behind the hub‐and‐spoke network structure is that the airline can serve passengers by nonstop flights between the hub and every served spoke city. In addition, it can serve traffic between any two spoke cities with one transfer by connecting passengers at the hub. Time bank is a core feature of the hub‐and‐spoke airline network. It is used to align flights scheduled at a hub to maximize the amount of connecting traffic.
