This chapter analyzes the current automotive development lifecycle and existing challenges. It provides recommendations on how to address security at each step in the automotive software development lifecycle. The traditional development process in the automotive industry follows the Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability determination V‐model. This development process shows the different activities and steps included in the automotive development lifecycle. For each step in the V‐model there are security solutions that automotive organizations can employ. To reduce the risk of software vulnerabilities, the following recommendations on how to address security in each stage of the software development cycle are provided. The chapter discusses new technical challenges and presents suggestions for how to tackle such challenges. An example that may introduce new technical challenges is adopting the fuzz testing activity in the development lifecycle.
