Parking is the first and last impression of a destination for many users. The key is to adopt smarter parking principles in planning and design. This chapter focuses on efficient, safe, and user‐friendly design of on‐street and off‐street parking in accordance with best practices available today. From a design and management perspective, one of the key parking considerations is the accommodation of preferential parking for the more sustainable commuting trips: electric/low‐emitting/fuel‐efficient vehicles (LEV) as well as ride sharing and car sharing vehicles. The chapter discusses trends and considerations that may in one way or another influence parking design today. Automated mechanical parking facilities (AMPFs) are generally considered more sustainable, primarily due to reduced vehicle emissions and the elimination of the need for lighting and ventilation. The overall use of energy is about half that of conventional parking garages.
