Maritime transportation is the least costly mode of transportation and, as such, it plays a major role in the world trade expansions. This chapter provides an overview of the importance of maritime transportation in current global economic conditions and introduces various types of loads and ships in maritime transportation. Bulk cargo is mainly divided into four categories, dry bulk cargo, liquid cargo, other main bulk commodities or break bulk, and containers. Containerization, a revolutionary concept in maritime transportation is reviewed. The chapter then presents a brief introduction to handling equipment in seaports. It also presents a short overview of the main optimization problems faced in maritime operations. Optimization problems in maritime operations like any other major decision‐making area are divided into three main levels, namely long‐term or strategic, mid‐term or tactical and short‐term or operational.
