Planning and development of road networks is important for energy efficient traffic flow, avoiding road crashes, and protecting the green environment. In road transportation, monitoring traffic flow and road conditions has been very important in improving the safety of transportation, especially in case of bad weather conditions. In this chapter, we first present an overview of components of the intelligent road transportation system. We then discuss the potential of leveraging the advancements in deep learning with Internet‐of‐Things (IoT) in modelling the short‐term traffic state for traffic flow prediction and optimizing the energy use in fuel, electricity consumption, and road lighting. In addition, the operation research models and methods can be utilized for determining the optimal route and reducing road traffic. Also, we discuss the role of the internet of things and fog and edge computing in road transportation. Further, road safety and security measures are presented.
