The GETAWAY project was conceived to provide additional clarification and guidance for the evacuation of large numbers of persons within a railway station during an emergency, such as that caused by a fire. It utilizes existing monitoring systems, such as fire detectors and CCTV cameras, combined with specially developed decision‐making software and active dynamic signage systems. The main objective of GETAWAY is to improve safety in transportation terminals through an innovative signage system. The review has been used in the determination of system specifications by identifying factors and constraints for the development of the IADSS. The review will also be used in the development of the guidelines for the use of the GETAWAY system within existing stations and when designing new terminals. The FDS has two functions within the IADSS. Furthermore, the proposed system will have application in other complex environments such as shopping malls, airport terminals, sports stadia, etc.
