This chapter introduces the subject of nonlinear dynamics and discusses some of its most important concepts. The analysis focuses on dynamic systems with a single degree of freedom, such as the linear harmonic oscillator and the galloping oscillator. Some of the important concepts to be discussed are common to both linear and nonlinear dynamical systems. Examples are fixed points, the phase plane, response trajectories and stability. Concepts such as multiple solutions, bifurcations and limit cycle oscillations are introduced on simple nonlinear systems. The fact that nonlinear systems can have an unknown or infinite number of fixed points means that a lot of nonlinear system analysis is local in nature. In other words, a number of fixed points of interest are chosen and the solution of the system is examined in the neighbourhood of these fixed points.
