There is a huge potential of legal technology. At the same time, it raises the question of why existing technologies have not yet changed the face of legal services. An in‐house counsel should lead on legal technology adoption to ensure that the tools to improve their legal operations are readily available. In this chapter, the authors present a general picture to compare in‐house and law firm LegalTech adoption. In private practice, it has been found that 97% of firms had adopted or were piloting client collaboration tools but in in‐house, the level of adoption is generally lower. Frequently cited barriers to LegalTech adoption are those catch‐22 situations of a lack of time, budget or resources to assess and implement available options. However, there is every reason for more in‐house teams to adopt LegalTech to the same levels or beyond their law firms and legal service providers.
