Aviation accidents/incidents happen quite frequently. The majority of these accidents involve general aviation pilots and aircraft. However, there are commercial airline accidents as well. Several very significant accidents happened in the 1970s and 1980s that led to the development of the Crew Resource Management (CRM) philosophy and training. CRM has helped to significantly reduce commercial airline accidents. Overall, commercial airline travel is much safer than other forms of transportation. However, aircraft with faulty designs still manage to make it into commercial service. The 737 MAX aircraft is one example. In 2019, 346 people were killed in 737 MAX aircraft accidents. Very skilled pilots can land crippled aircraft. Two examples in this chapter are the events called the Gimli Glider and Miracle on the Hudson.
