The title of this book indicates that the book deals with the advanced design of aircraft as well as the design of advanced aircraft. This combination of aspects distinguishes it from existing text books which primarily aim at treating basic principles of designing airplanes with a traditional configuration. This chapter sketches the contributions of advanced designers to early concept finding and further development toward a future project, including derived versions of the existing product line. It exposes the schematic outline of a typical civil airplane development process. Instead of the traditional approach based on statistical and numerical solutions, the book proposes a quasi‐analytical methodology for drawing up design tools based on first principles. This leads to explicit optimization and parametric overviews to be used for selecting primary design variables. Elements of automated design synthesis, structuring the overall sizing problem and multidisciplinary optimization are discussed. An overview of enabling technologies to be considered in the conceptual and preliminary design stages is presented as an introduction to more detailed treatment in subsequent chapters.
