Undercarriages play a surprisingly large role in all aircraft design. They may contribute up to 10% of the overall weight and drag of the aircraft and see the largest loads of any components. They significantly influence the amount of thrust needed at take‐off and limit the accelerations the rest of the aircraft see upon landing. We set out some of the systems we have used to enable safe take‐off and landing.
