Adverse weather conditions such as snowfall and freezing temperatures deteriorate road surface conditions to a level that threatens traffic safety and disturbs mobility. The main countermeasures to mitigate these effects are snow plowing, scraping, applying anti‐/de‐icing chemicals or spreading abrasives (e.g., sand). This chapter covers the fundamentals of these operations. It explains the different design parameters of a snowplow, explains how chemicals prevent water from freezing and prevent the build‐up of compacted snow, and describes how chemicals can melt ice. Finally, friction enhancement by abrasives is covered by explaining how abrasives can create friction.
