Exponential growth of in‐vehicle driving systems and their interaction with the driver and other infrastructure elements makes it imminent to focus on the effect and impact of navigation support and traffic information functionalities included in nomadic devices (NDs) to driving behavior. A within‐participant design was implemented with eight experienced and common drivers, following preset routes with navigation support and traffic information integrated in the aftermarket device. The combination of speed limit information and navigation support decreased variation significantly (p = 0.12) by 35 percent when compared to free driving in pure baseline control conditions. A statistically significant decrease (p < 0.05) in percentage of time with dangerous car‐following behavior with the combination of ADAS and ND functions was found. An increase in headway within safe limits is not as positive an outcome for traffic efficiency as a decrease in driving with dangerous distance‐keeping behavior is.
