Many modern hybrid electric vehicles use planetary geartrain to achieve electric continuous variable transmission (e‐CVT). This chapter first discusses the principle of planetary geartrain. It then looks at various hybrid transmissions, including the Toyota Prius, Ford Escape, GM‐Two‐Mode hybrid, dual clutch hybrid transmission, Timken hybrid, Renault hybrid, Toyota Highlander hybrid, Camry hybrid, Tasi, and Zhang's hybrid. Finally, the operation principle of the Chevy Volt range extended electric vehicle is discussed in detail. Dynamics of planetary gear based hybrid are briefly introduced. Mode transition of various hybrid transmissions is discussed in detail.
