Navigation is the process of moving from one's current position to another specific point on the surface of the Earth that is not in view. A great circle on the Earth is any maximum circumference circle around the globe and is the intersection line between a plane passing through the center of the Earth and the surface. Chart scale is the ratio of the linear distance between two features on a chart and the distance between the same two features on the Earth. To fly to the next waypoint during a navigation requires the accurate calculation of two variables, the magnetic heading to fly and the time required to reach the waypoint. To calculate either of these requires knowledge of the true airspeed (TAS) at the altitude that the aircraft will fly and this must be determined from the indicated airspeed (IAS), which is the only directly measured quantity.
