Mission operations are related to mission success, which can be considered as quantity, quality, and availability of delivered mission products and services within a given cost envelope. This chapter provides an introduction to mission operations, rules, and functions, emphasizing the particular aspects that concern nanosatellite operations. The European Cooperation for Space Standardization standards indicate a series of reference documents for mission operations plan and other operations’ document output. The principal ones are the mission analysis report, the mission operations concept document, and space segment user manual. Mission success is related to estimation and management of mission cost. Some rules can help the operators to take the right decisions, limiting the mission costs and increasing the success. The rules are to define mission requirements and constraints; to participate in all mission design phases; to avoid complexity; to design for operability; to provide operation description document; to share knowledge; to perform tests; and to use existing facilities.
