The adoption of intelligent transport systems (ITS) technologies is expected to bring many benefits to society in the areas of transport safety, mobility, and sustainability. This chapter is restricted to the subset of ITS functions relating to vehicle control, focusing on the rapidly developing trend towards increasing automation of vehicle driving functions and the associated regulatory implications, primarily from a European perspective. This review updates and extends the analysis of legal aspects relating to advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic is an international treaty that aims to facilitate international road traffic and to increase road safety through the adoption of uniform road traffic rules. Proposals for possible amendments to the Vienna Convention have been made by United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), with the aim of ensuring that systems approved under UNECE regulations are also accepted as complying with the Vienna Convention.
