Iron and steel products, at the end of their service life, are recovered as scrap for steelmaking, and are regenerated repeatedly as new iron and steel products. In this way, iron and steel products contribute to environmental conservation as highly recyclable materials. On the other hand, high-performance steel products offer high energy-saving potential. High-performance steel products require higher energy input at their production stage but these products save energy throughout their application stage. Among representative examples of energy saving made possible by the use of high-performance steel are: light-weight automobile bodies of high-strength steel sheets allowing improved automobile fuel efficiency, and motors and transformers made of high-performance electrical sheet with low core loss yielding reduced power loss. Furthermore, high durability of coated steel sheets leads to energy saving, too. An assessment of energy-saving effects of high-performance steel products is presented.
