The main goal of this work was to quantify the fatigue life of spot-welded stainless steel sheets type AISI 301 LN and AISI 304, with austenitic structure, in order to expand their use range to the large transport vehicles and particularly in the railway field which presents high cycle service stresses; to reach this aim, stainless steel sheets of 1.5 mm - 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm thickness was tested under stress conditions. Since these new uses requires mechanical works involving strong deformation to the stainless steel sheets, that causes their work hardening, and a large spot-welded joints application, the testing operation were executed on the same work hardened and spot-welded materials. Testing activities were divided as follows: definition of spot-welding parameters in overlapped edges configuration, acquisition of fatigue strength data on cold bent and spot-welded sheets in overlapped edges configuration joint. The obtained results pointed out the materials adequacy in a spot-welding use. Concerning to the spot welded joints in overlapped edges configuration, the results of fatigue tests enabled to value the joint optimal liner density, related to the fatigue resistance evaluated an 106 cycles, defined as ratio between two welding points distance (It) and the welding point diameter (d). This value results to be It/d < 4. The stress amplitude applied during the fatigue tests have been calculated as overage of stress acting on the welding points. The stress amplitude at the fatigue limit N(f) = 2x106 cycles results for AISI 301LN sheets as 60 MPa and for AISI 304L sheets as 70 MPa.
