The demand for increased corrosion resistance has led to a materials revolution in the construction of automobiles. This dramatic change involves substitution of coated products in place of bare, cold-rolled sheet steel for body panels. The major coated sheet products in use today are hot-dip galvanized and galvanneal; electroplated zinc, zinc-nickel, and zinc-iron; and composite organic/zinc nickel. These products are described in terms of microstructure and resistance to perforation and cosmetic corrosion.
