Ever since the first oil crisis 1973, demands for lowered energy consumption have been increasing. As a result, the adoption of aluminium in many automobile parts to reduce weight and raise fuel economy has become increasingly wide spread. The ratio of aluminium use in Japanese-made cars, in 1985 3,5%, is forecasted to increase to 8,3% in 2000. Recently, the adoption of aluminium parts has been increasing to make up for the weight increase due to the high functional parts embarked. Wrought aluminium is being more widely used in comparison with cast aluminium which had been mainly used until now. This paper describes the present state of research and development on wrought aluminium in such applications as auto body sheets, rapidly solidified powder alloys, brazed aluminium honeycomb panels, aluminium lithium alloys and aluminium alloys for heat exchangers.
