The emergence and recognition in Europe of a new generation of versatile, weldable low-cost stainless steels has led to a low-initial-cost design revolution in the structural use of stainless steels. These steels have allowed cost-effective design combining long-term corrosion resistance, high strength and low weight. This paper reviews the development and properties of these steels, and the design ethic involved in their successful utilization for automotive design.
