A small buoy-based radio data link was demonstrated from a 96-element seafloor hydrophone array to a nearby ship. The data link transmitted error-free digital data at approximately 1 Mbps. A low bandwidth backlink was also implemented. Although radio data links have been used in conjunction with remote buoys for many years, fast digital radios allow communications bandwidth that was previously unaffordable for many underwater sensing applications. The ability to expand on the capability to autonomous, deployable hydroacoustic sensing applications is described.
