The optimization for closed-cycle 100-MW Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant was carried out between the plate-type heat exchanger and the double-fluted tube-type one using ammonia as the working fluid by the method of the steepest descent. The performance of both heat exchangers were compared. In terms of cost, the plate-type heat exchanger was found to be more desirable than the double-fluted tube-type for an OTEC application.
