An EPA-sponsored field sampling program was conducted in the metropolitan Denver area to study particulate matter (PM) concentrations near a major arterial intersection. The study used two portable monitors to measure PM-10 and PM-3.5 at several distances upwind/downwind of the intersection and upwind/downwind of a nearby midlock segment with freeflowing traffic. Reference PM-10 monitors were also used to collect 24-hr samples at the four sampling locations. The results were used to determine whether winter traffic significantly increases PM concentrations, and whether hot spot modeling guidance is needed to fulfill requirements of the Transportation Conformity Rule.
