The characteristic curves of engine cooling fans e.g. used in trucks are usually measured on standardized test stands. On such a test stand measurements of the characteristic fan curves were carried out with different axial fan positions. The results show that there is a significant influence of the axial fan position on the fan performance. However, the geometry of the test stand differs from the fan environment in the real truck. Thus the question arises, how far results gained from a test rig can be transferred to the installation in a vehicle. In this paper results obtained from measurements on the standardized test stand are compared to results measured under realistic installation conditions. Thereby measurements with two different fans clearly show the same trends under test stand conditions and under realistic installation conditions. The measurements under realistic conditions reveal that there is a large potential for optimization by the correct choice of the axial fan position. Moreover, measurements with different test setups prove that the engine behind the fan does scarcely deteriorate the discharge flow of the fan. But the bottom of the driver's cabin or an encapsulation of the engine may act as a diffuser and distinctly improve the static pressure rise of the fan.
