Coring is an important part of oil and gas exploration, involving the sampling of insitu rock formation to define the geology of oil and/or gas reservoirs. Coring of unconsolidated or soft formations can be difficult, as cores can easily be damaged or lost in conventional core barrels. This paper describes the new Full-Closure Coring System, designed to recover cores in these types of difficult formations. The new system provides a full, unrestricted inside diameter to prevent contact that can damage the core. After the core has been cut, a change in the flow of the drilling fluid will trip the Full-Closure ball valve, shearing through the core and capturing it in the inner barrel. This process prevents loss and contamination of the core as it is retrieved from the well. This paper will also cover design, construction laboratory, and field testing of the new Full-Closure Coring System.
