Boeing Commercial Aircraft interior panels are covered with a decorative thermoplastic film. This film, Decorative Tedlar Laminate (DTL) is applied by heating it to malleability and then pulling vacuum to stretch it over an adhesive coated panel. Qualification of a new decorative laminate adhesive hinges on final appearance. During the vacuum form laminating process, high initial tack of adhesive inhibits DTL from sliding smoothly on panels. Under such conditions wrinkles form and texture washes out in the Tedlar. To aid qualification and reformulation, tack, at the elevated temperatures used in the vacuum form process, needed to be quantified relative to the current acceptable adhesive. A testing method simulating the decorative application process was developed to estimate tack interactions. This test, a modified sled coefficient of friction test, provides quick, repeatable results for quantifying elevated temperature adhesive interactions. Results of this test were instrumental in qualification of the final candidate.
