The placement of an adjustable stabilizer in a near bit rotary application is being used with considerable success to drill the extremely demanding horizontal wells in BP's current North Sea Harding Project. High performance horizontal drilling, allied to optimal reservoir performance, is considered paramount to success and specific reference is made to the technical attributes and benefits of utilizing the adjustable stabilizer system. Inclination control of the horizontal rotary assemblies is obviously critical with regard to drilling, but it is also proving to be crucial in relation to the holistic total life-cycle management considerations of these very demanding and challenging wells.
