Aluminum-lithium alloys for aerospace applications have under development for many years in Russia. This high-strength, weldable alloy is playing a key role in the development of an aircraft that operates on cryogenic fuel. The creation of MAKS aviation/space system is presented and how it necessitated the development of AL-Li alloy 1460. The data on the alloys mechanical properties, comparison with other materials, and review of the cryogenic fuel tank project are also included.
