In 1997, Chevron initiated a program to upgrade the level gauging of aboveground storage tanks in its marketing sector to state-of-the-art automatic tank gauge (ATG) technology. One of its facilities was selected as a test site and seven storage tanks were retrofitted with ATG systems. Field measurements showed that actual accuracies were well below expectations. A subsequent study determined the causes and limits of the inaccuracies.
