The fluctuating thrust of a vane-axial water jet pump was investigated, in particular the influence of rotor-stator spacing. A simple model was developed to predict the pump unsteady thrust, based on established empirical relations for the rotor wake and basic airfoil unsteady lift theory. Experiments were conducted using one pump operated in a small water basin. Theoretical predictions were found to be in reasonable agreement with measured values. An optimal rotor-stator spacing was identified experimentally. This trend was not predicted well by the model. Discrepancies between the predictions and the experimental data were attributed to un-modeled inflow non-uniformity, and possible secondary flows within the pump impeller.
