An approximate method to include bending stiffness into an implicit membrane FEM formulation for axisymmetric problems was developed to allow multi-stage drawing operations of round cups to be simulated with considerably less computational effort than is involved in standard shell or continuum formulations. Analyses of round cup drawing using membrane ornaments were compared to those employing the new formulation that includes bending effects. The parameters that influence the accuracy of the solution most significantly were identified, and recommendations for the optimum choice of parameters were made.
