The paper describes the control requirements of an auxiliary power unit (APU) for use in a series hybrid electric vehicle. The APU comprises of an i.c. engine driving a permanent magnet generator in the speed range 3000-4000 rpm controlled to provide an approximately constant output power as the battery voltage fluctuates due to the changing road power demand. A dual-droop control scheme allows the engine to operate at a speed and throttle opening selected for high efficiency and low emissions whilst avoiding rapid throttle movements which tend to increase HC emissions.
