This document describes a New Digital Smart Flight Data Recorder System being currently under final development at Dornier and which is suitable for installation into helicopters and small airplanes as well. The Smart Flight Data Recorder System is representing a new and straight forward approach to a lightweight and cost attractive FDR System combining consequently the features of hard mounted and ejectable crash recorders. Furthermore the Smart FDR System combines the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder into one redundant system with dislocated recorder modules enabling data recovery after a crash. The adaption of the Smart FDR System to the operational requirements of the UH TIGER is currently performed under a contract awarded from the German BWB.
