This paper will present an up to date overview of the status of the Ford Motor Company hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) development program. While it was not possible to cover all aspects of the program in detail, sufficient information is presented to adequately describe program status. Elements of the hybrid program to be discussed include the new 1.2 L DI Diesel engine, current hybrid powertrain, and status of the vehcle build and test program. Significant progress has been made in selecting the optimum vehicle and powertrain configuration based on the desire to maximize vehicle fuel economy and minimize cost impact while meeting anticipated future US emissions regulations. The analysis process used to generate vehicle and powertrain specifications will be shown to be an effective tool in providing direction to the vehicle development effort.
