The added resistance of slender ships in small sea states has been studied numerically and experimentally. Added resistance in small sea states is important for the overall fuel economy of the ship, since most ships operate most of the time in sea states that must be considered small in this context. The added resistance for ships with slender bows has been found to be of significance for significant wave heights as small as 1 % of the ship length. The current method for computing added resistance in short waves, uses only the wave reflection effect. It has been found to give correct results for a ship with a blunt bow and vertical sides in the waterline, but has been found to seriously underestimate the added resistance of slender ships. On the other hand, measuring added resistance in small sea states in the towing tank is very difficult, mainly due to stability problems of the small waves in question. Thus, an improved numerical scheme for computing added resistance in small sea states is needed.
