This paper presents the results of recent efforts to develop a practical computational method that analyzes nonlinear hydrodynamic loads and dynamic responses of a ship in waves. Ships travelling in severe seas often experience impact loads caused by bottom slamming, when the bow emerges and reenters the water; or bow flare impact, when a bow with significant above-the-waterline flare submerges rapidly. The loads generated by impact are of large magnitude but short duration and can induce high-frequency hull vibration usually referred to as 'whipping'. Whipping responses will amplify the midship global bending moment and accelerate structural fatigue damages. In addition, high pressure concentration in the impact zone will cause local structural damage. These types of loadings are highly nonlinear and have become important considerations in the ship design today. This paper presents the LAMP (Large Amplitude Motion Program) System, an integrated computational tool incorporating hydrodynamics, impact, and structural whipping response calculations, that narrows the gap between conceptual and practical design. Computational results are presented to show that impact and whipping related dynamic loadings are important parts of the total structural loadings, and must be included in the analysis for ship structural design, and that the present system can be applied to unconventional hull forms.
