Laser welding is a suitable joining technique, to optimize the production of aluminium-car-bodys. Compared to joining techniques already in use laser welding shows a lot of advantages: less thermal distortion and weakening of the material, high welding speed, new component design, and improved reshaping properties. Because of the physical properties, a relatively high threshold intensity is needed for laserwelding of aluminium to be possible at all. Process instabilities may be the formation of pores (hydrogen pores, process pores), melting spatter, interruption faults, and hot cracking. To prevent hot cracking filler material in wire-from or powder-form has to be used (for example AlSi5, AlSi12, AlMg5). For optimum welded results process parameters, the choice of laser, and the method of process control must be carefully matched to the joining task. Eventually the kind of the desired application determines the handling system. So there are various combinations of system technology that can be used. Some examples (laser beam welding with filler wire to avoid hot cracks, welding of overlap joints with filler wire, welding out of position, and laser beam welding with powder feeding) are given to show how the choice can look for different applications and how the boundary conditions are.
