AVL CRUISE has been developed in a joint co-operation with major German car manufactures to deal with the increasing demands of vehicle simulation. It combines the features from some of the best software available for such calculations. Its modular concept enables totally free modelling on the basis of existing modules so that exotic concepts, such as hybrid cars or cars with several engines, can be simulated. It has an ergonomic graphical user interface, sophisticated solvers to ensure short calculation times, and a database connection to handle the high amount of data. Typical applications of this software are the calculation of vehicle driving performance and the evaluation of fuel consumption and emissions for standard driving cycles or any other driving profile. With the intelligent driver module, different behaviours of the driver can be taken into account. Advanced calculations cover the low-frequency dynamics of the drive train, based on a model of the drive train consisting of a mixed set of torsional-elastic and stiff shafts (dynamic-kinematic coupling). In a next release, 'hardware in the loop' capability will be given by the integration of CRUISE with AVL testbed systems, which allows to use the real engine and parts of the drive train in the simulation.
