The nickel/metal-hybride battery shows such great promise for pure electric vehicle (PEV) use that recently many vehicle manufacturers have decided to adopt it for their electric vehicles. With its high power and long life characteristics, it is also very promising for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) use. In fact, we have developed a new enery storage system for HEV's, based on a small cylindrical nickel/metal hybride (NiMH) battery, that has high power and excellent ability to accept high-power energy from regenerative braking. The battery cell has more than 500 W/kg of specific power, more than 400 W/kg of specific regenerative power and 10-year estimated life time. The battery pack for a parallel hybrid vehicle, which is composed of 240 battery cells and a management system has displayed fairly good performance in power characteristics and onboard durability.
