The design and optimization of power steering systems can be effectively supported by digital simulations. Different software tools used for the simulation of hydraulic power steering systems are described. The simulations are applied to simulate steering dynamics. Furthermore, it is also shown how to analyze and reduce oscillation and noise problems of steering systems. Software packages specialized for mechanical or hydraulic simulations are combined for this purpose. In order to overcome the disadvantages and restrictions when using a hydraulic simulation package for mechanical systems and vice versa using mechanical software for hydraulic simulations the coupling of these specialized packages is presented. Both, the car manufacturer and the steering system supplier have benefits of coupled software tools. When using their partners' mathematical models their own simulations can be improved. In future, there will be a closer co-operation between the vehicle manufacturers and their system suppliers and system models will be exchanged.
