As a project planning and design company and a supplier of complete in-pit crushing (IPC) systems, MAN TAKRAF Foerdertechnik, Leipzig (Germany) deals intensively with the economics of the significantly reduced operating costs of the belt conveyor on inclinations and over long distances as compared with truck operation. The main benefits of continuous equipment are: (1) Considerably lower costs of spares and wearing parts; (2) lower specific power requirements; (3) extensive independence from crude oil products; (4) lower personnel costs; (5) significantly lower costs for road construction and maintenance and (6) no or very low environmental pollution. First the current status of the technical development of IPC systems is characterized, regarding crusher technology (with examples such as Escondida Copper Ore Open Pit Mine (Chile), Yanbu Limestone Open Pit Mine (Saudi Arabia) or Chuquicamata Copper Ore Open Pit Mine (Chile)) and belt conveyor technology (with examples such as EL ABRA (Chile) - overland conveyor and heap leach system) and dumping systems. Economic considerations are presented by studying an application example for a relatively small open pit mine with an annual output of 11 million t overburden and an external dump location in the vicinity. The economic application of the crusher/conveyor/spreader system starts at a depth of just 50 m when assuming the usual cost levels. To determine the effect of the mine's depth, calculations were made for 90 m, 180 m and 270 m. Comparing the configuration of a pure truck system and an IPC System for 2400 t/h, for 90 m, 180 m, and 270 m depth of open pit mine, the savings by using IPC systems are as follows: (1) For capital costs 10 %, 30 %, and 50%, (2) for spare and wearing parts 40 %, 55 %, and 65 %, and (3) for power costs 10 %, 40 %, and 55%. The in-pit crushing system consists of a semi-mobile crushing plant whose discharge conveyor directly feeds a steep angle conveyor system. Depending on the depth of the open pit mine (90 m, 180 m, 270 m), 1, 2 or 3 steep conveyor sections with a 90 m lifting height each are used. The sandwich belt principle is applied here. A 600 m long shiftable dump conveyor with a belt width of 1,000 mm is connected at the edge of the open pit mine.
