In the past, outer dimensions of new cars grew steadily as the feature content of new vehicles increased. Today's markets no longer accept cars to increase in size. While the car remains constant in size, the customer still expects the vehicle to perform better in terms of roominess, noise, vibration, safety and fuel efficiency. As a result the available package space to mount components such as climate control units or electronic control systems decreases. In addition, new electronic systems offering additional functionality demand extra space. This situation requires specific technologies which also take the growing demand for quality and reliability of electronic modules and their connecting technologies into consideration. A concept challenging standard electronic packaging concepts, with numerous functional and design advantages for certain application areas, is the injection moulded circuit board. Moulded circuit boards are also often called Moulded Interconnection Devices (MIDs). MIDs are highly integrated devices incorporating a conductive circuit pattern, housing as well as various mechanical and electrical components. The injection moulding process yields the advantage to manufacture three dimensional MID substrates in a cost effective manner. A Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter as well as a Remote Entry Sensor (RES) module, jointly forming the remote keyless entry system, have been chosen to assess the potential of two promising MID manufacturing methods for electronic applications. The two processes as well as suitable substrate materials and integration opportunities will be discussed in this paper.
