The simulation of the transient behaviour of internal combustion engines is state of engineering for several years now. A major problem is the immense computing time caused by calculating the working process in degree crank angle steps. However, usually a detailed knowledge of the internal cylinder processes as a function of crank position is not necessary for transient simulations. Most of the time the mean process values of the cylinder of one operation cycle are sufficient. Therefore the working process calculation is carried out for the whole operation area before the transient simulation is started. A special designed program is used, the results are stored in an n-dimensional characteristic map. During the simulation, the necessary process values are interpolated out of the map. In the used simulation program, the different components of the engine can be described either by an equation (e.g. governor, nozzle), a characteristic map (e.g. cylinder, compressor, turbine) or both (e.g. friction). This technique has been proven with four stroke car engines and was modified to simulate medium and slow speed four and two stroke marine diesel engines. The results calculated by the simulation program show a good correspondence to measured reference data supplied by MAN B&W. The modular structure of the simulation program allows a very flexible use. New modules describing engines components can be added easily. All the calculations have been carried out on a low cost Pentium PC. Although the simulation is still far from real time, the computing time for the transient simulation has been reduced dramatically without a loss in accuracy.
