Sheet metal forming tools can be manufactured based on the concept of layder laminate manufacturing. Experimental manufacturing is thus being carried out on auto-body panel forming tools to which actual application of this method is much looked forward to. Many problems however exist-such as obtaining laser cutting data from 3D CAD solid data, selection of sheet thickness, sheet joining, bead profile on die surface, removal of sheet steps, and assembled forming tool accuracy and rigidity. As expected, compared to current metal casting and machining methods, the manufacturing time can be shortened. Press forming experiments performed show that this prototyped forming tool can be put to actual use by implementing detailed technical improvements.
